Day 1 – 3: Shinde concession, Okavango delta – Footsteps across the Okavango Delta (2 nights)
On arrival into Maun, you will be met and transferred by private charter to Shinde camp and be driven to your mobile camp “Footsteps across the Delta” where you will spend the first two nights of your safari adventure.
The area: At Footsteps Across the Delta you enter one of the great, untamed regions of Africa, the spectacular Okavango Delta, and experience the astonishing contrasts created when the mighty Okavango River flows into the arid Kalahari Desert. The result is a variety of habitats, riverine forest, palm islands, permanent swamps and dry sandveld all with an unparalleled wealth of animal diversity. Read More »
The camp: This Ker & Downey Botswana program maintains the elegance and eccentricity of the original ‘African Safari under canvas’. The Footsteps Across the Delta base is a comfortable private camp which accommodates guests in three specially designed twin bedded tents with sewn-in floors. Each tent has its own bucket shower and bush toilet, and even a daily laundry service. The ‘bush kitchen’ run by our chef, prepares menus to whet all appetites.
Activities: The emphasis is on exploring this breathtakingly beautiful and diverse environment as the first African explorer’s did, either by mokoro (traditional canoe) or on foot. The Footsteps Across the Delta offers the highlight of a ‘true safari’ experience. No special training is required, as distances travelled resemble those of early days, where the emphasis is on exploration and discovery – each morning tracking fresh spoor to reveal the night’s events. Other possible activities include game-drives, mekoro trips or fishing, which vary throughout the year.
Footsteps Across the Delta offers a personal walking safari experience, hosting a maximum of 6 guests at a time, making it an ideal option for small groups of friends or family. The emphasis on your stay at Footsteps is on guided walks where you have the time to focus on learning about tracking wildlife and understanding animal movement, patterns and behavior, as well as more in depth information on trees, grasses and the finer details. Being on foot instead of in a vehicle affords this unique perspective. Footsteps Camp is the base of our Young Explorer’s Delta packages, which is a family safari led by a specialist guide that tailors the safari to suit children as young as 7 years old.

This being a community concession, guests are privy to night drives which are usually not permitted in the National Parks or Game Reserve.
The vegetation here is quite different from the Western section of Moremi where great stands of leadwood and mopane woodlands occur in close proximity to open grasslands and the Khwai River.
Wildlife encountered include lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, as well as a multitude of other animals, including elephant, buffalo, zebra, hippo and giraffe to name a few. Read More »
