Kanga Camp

Stunning Walking Safaris in Mana Pools

  • How to get there ?
Accessing Mana Pools, is not easy, especially as the  rainy season starts. You may:
    - use a charter flight from a local airport to Mana Pools main airstrip – we will arrange it for you.
    - get a road transfer from Harare (5h), or from Lusaka.
    - Self-drive to the camp is not easy – experienced 4WD drivers though may check out our safari maps or contact us for directions.

  • Children: Children under 6 years old are only accepted during Easter, Christmas and special promoted periods, or by prior arrangement: please  contact us.
  • Ideal length of stay: 3-4 days in Mana Pools are a minimum, but you may stay longer to fully enjoy the Natural Park and the Zambezi river.
  • Safari itineraries: You may easily combine a stay at Kanga with a  Zambezi Walking & Canoeing Safari adventure or a stay at Zambezi Life Styles along the river in Mana Pools, Somalisa Camp or Somalisa Acacia  in Hwange, Linyanti Bush Camp , Linyanti Ebony or Khwai Tented Camp in Botswana, or Victoria Falls. Several of our suggested safari itineraries also include a stay at Kanga. Do not hesitate to contact us to arrange the best combination for you.
Wildlife & Activities

Kanga Pan, as a permanent water source in the area, attracts animals to its waterhole all year round, including many larger species such as elephant and buffalo, and where plains game such as kudu, zebra, impala and waterbuck are also found. In addition, Kanga Pan is a Predator’s paradise; a resident lion pride lives permanently in the vicinity of the camp, wild dogs and leopards are often sighted. Hyena, cheetah, and crocodile are also present. An extensive and varied amount of birdlife can be enjoyed from the main area of the Camp.
  • Safari Activities : Activities will include game drives in open four-wheel drive vehicles and night drives, but the most unique and exciting activity is tracking wild life on foot with a professional guide: the possibility to leave your vehicle, or even walk out of the camp with an experienced professional guide is a rare experience in National Parks, and this is one of the best walking territories in Africa. You will enjoy thrilling nature walks to areas unreachable by car, and get even closer to nature and the animals.
Kanga is the only private concession in Mana Pools: so you are unlikely to meet anyone when on game-viewing excursions, and you will get a true sense of privacy.
Canoeing safaris on the Zambezi can be organised on request in advance, as well as full-day excursions to the Zambezi River.

The Camp

Kanga Camp can be best described as “the old Africa in a new era”.

  • Camp situation : Kanga Camp is set in a private concession in Mana Pools, 15 km from the Zambezi River along the seasonal floodplain of the Ruckomechi River, not too far Chitake Springs.
  • Accomodation: Tented Camp
Tents are comfortably furnished in a large walk-in Meru style, with en-suite bathroom facilities, out-door bucket showers with flushing toilets and private verandas over-looking the water hole
  • Capacity : 6 tents with a total of 12 beds.
  • Facilities: The main chill-out area is built on raised decking, under the shade of large trees. It overlooks the splash pool and Kanga pan, where abundant game can be viewed.
  • Cuisine & Dining: The central relaxing lounge also transposes as the dining area, where you will enjoy great home cooked meals with other guests, rangers and guides. Bush dining can also be arranged.
  • Eco-respect: Lighting in the tents is provided by rechargeable units, backed up with beautiful, crafted silver kerosene lanterns. We have adopted recycled glasswares for our dining usage. All plastics and other non biodegradable materials are transported out and taken to the official disposal dump near Kariba. We have converted to gas for our refrigeration and kitchen / cooking needs, thus reducing the use of generator and fuels. Showers are the stylish, old fashioned and traditional safari showers at the moment and we are looking at a conversion to solar for the hot water. We place a lot of emphasis on  low impact walking, low disturbance activities on foot as the area really lends itself to this, we are very careful in the planning of new roads and the present road network with special cognizance paid to drainage areas and drainage patterns, erosion etc.
  • Communications: The camp can communicate by satellite phone in case of emergency.

  • US$ 440 -  May to October (medium & high seasons)
    US$ 150 single supplement.
